As part of efforts toward promoting intellectual discourse within the university community and especially among students, the Redeemer’s University Ede, recently held its 3rd inter-faculty debate competition with the theme “Erosion of Societal Values among Nigerian Youths: Parental Neglect or Influence of Social Media?”

Speaking at the event, the Vice-Chancellor Prof. Anthony Akinlo, represented by the Dean, College of Postgraduate Studies Prof. Ahmed Yerima, welcomed everyone to the best private university in Nigeria. He noted that the aim of the debate was to arouse critical thinking in the hearts and minds of the students as well as proffer tangible contributions to issues of national importance. 

All the eight faculties in Redeemer’s University, (Basic Medical Sciences, Social Sciences, Natural Sciences, Management Sciences, Built Environment Studies, Engineering, Law and Humanities) were duly represented by a team of thinkers who defended their positions brilliantly.

Although the main topic for the debate concerned societal values among youths, the topic which determined the teams to proceed to the final was “Youth Participation in Politics – Too Young or Not Too Young to Run?” Judges were drawn from sister private and public universities within the state and at the end of the final round, Team Law was adjudged the winner, having beaten Team Basic Medical Sciences, Natural Sciences and Humanities to the crown in that order.

Eminent dignitaries such as the Provost, College of Postgraduate Studies, Redeemer’s University – Prof. Ahmed Yerima; the Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences – Prof. I. Oloyede; the Dean, Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences – Prof. B. Salau; the Dean, Faculty of Natural Sciences – Prof. A. Osho; the Dean, Faculty of Humanities – Prof. A. Dairo and the Dean, Faculty of Law- Prof. O. Akinola were in attendance. Also, staff and students of the university, as well as invited guests especially from neighboring universities and secondary schools, were present.
