In line with her vision of making a transformative impact on society through excellence and combining theory with practice, Redeemer’s University recently launched a community of technology enthusiasts as it held its first tech festival.
The event which was put together by a team of students called RUNTechSpace and supported by the staff of the Department of Computer Science saw participants from different departments and faculties within the university, as well as students from sister universities such as Obafemi Awolowo University Ile-Ife, the Federal University of Agriculture Abeokuta among others.
Central to discussions was how technology has disrupted key financial operations and how everyone can find a place in the world of tech. Seasoned speakers took the stage one after the other to give personal experiences and insights concerning vital aspects of the industry and the relationship between these and other disciplines such as Banking, Law, Linguistics and Communication.
Speaking on the fintech space, Pascal Ntsama CEO, Canza Finance (a neobank utilizing decentralized finance) stated that the fintech space creates opportunities for investments as technology had disrupted the manner and conduct of the financial sector in globally. Mokut Udofia, an intellectual property and technology attorney based in NewYork spoke on navigating the tech space in the field of law and she taught on the prospects of law in tech as well as the need for legal awareness within the tech industry.
The crescendo of the event was when an alumnus, Mr. Wole Odeleye, a financial services industry lead at Microsoft took the stage. Apart from sharing the story of his personal journey in the tech world, he urged attendees, particularly the students to pay attention to opportunities for learning, to think of ways to contribute to the progress of whatever organisation they find themselves, in and to take courses online to further equip themselves.
Other speakers included Bekere Amassoma Program Manager, Sub Saharan Africa, Oracle Academy; Dolo Nosamiefan Program Manager, ACEGID Sentinel Project, Opeyemi Olatoye Product Manager, Hoshitech and Olanrewaju Oyinbooke, Senior Cloud Advocate, Microsoft.
