Redeemer’s University Has Capability To Contain Lassa Fever-VC

The Redeemer’s University, Ede, Osun state, has hinted that the institution has capability to contain and eliminate Lassa fever through its research activities.

The Vice Chancellor, Professor Debo  Adeyewa, gave the hint during the 13th matriculation ceremony of the university,recently.

He frowned at what he described as the refusal of the Federal Government to acknowledge and support the research efforts of the institution towards finding panacea to the problem of Lassa fever.

He said with the millions of naira the University has spent on research relating to infectious diseases as part of its efforts to solve national problems; the Federal Government has not given any financial support to encourage the University.

“We are the only university that has been addressing the issues scientifically. We have done research on Lassa fever. We have been working with Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital to provide solutions to Lassa fever.

However, Adeyewa called for more collaboration and financial incentives, saying the university has been using its money to solve public problems.

“Our Centre of Excellence is currently supporting the containment of the nationwide Lassa fever scourge being managed at Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital, Edo state.


“As a foremost institution known for excellence, Redeemer’s University hosts the World Bank supported African Centre of Excellence for the Genomics of Infectious Diseases (ACEGID) engaged in cutting-edge research which has provided much needed panacea to the outbreak of such hemorrhagic fevers, such as Ebola Virus Disease, Lassa Fever and Monkey Pox, among others both locally and internationally.

He urged the students to be of good conduct as the matriculation confers on them, full membership of the university.

Advising the students to make use of the university’s library to enrich their knowledge, Adeyewa assured that the library has been equipped to enable the students excel academically.

“I admonish you to be focused, diligent and law abiding. Throughout your stay at Redeemer’s University, always remember that dreams do not become reality through magic; it takes sweat, determination and hard work.

“You are admonished to attend lectures regularly and to make use of library facilities to enrich and deepen your knowledge and understanding of your course of study.
