The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Shadrach Akindele, who was represented by Prof. Emmanuel Unuabonah, has lauded the Redeemer’s University Women Association (RUNWA) for encouraging the culture of planting among staff.
Speaking at a Wealth Creation Workshop organized by RUNWA, Prof. Unuabonah noted that the workshop, which was to empower women in RUN Community as well as other participants, was timely and in line with the vision of the institution to continuously impact the community through a commitment to excellence. He noted that urban agriculture is the future of society, especially for Nigerians.
Delivering the keynote speech, the Chief Executive Officer, Green Gold Foods and Beverages Limited and Founder, Hope Alive Training Academy, and Urban Agriculture School, Mrs. Oluwatomi Olatoye, highlighted the importance of growing ‘OBE’ (soup) garden. She stated that, growing your vegetable helps to avoid eating pesticide infested vegetables and spices hence, reducing complicated health issues, “gardening gives healthy produce that helps human to live long.”
Mrs Olatoye further encouraged cancer and diabetic patients to own and tend a garden because it will expose such persons to the morning sun, which contains vitamin D, “gardening with family brings unity and bonding, it teaches children to be kind-hearted and balanced by tendering to every plant,” she said.
She finally charged all participants to use cans, containers, and pet bottles to plant even when there was no space to grow things around them.
Also speaking at the event, RUNWA Chairperson, Mrs Hannah Akindele, lent her voice to prioritizing planting an “Obe” garden in every home as this will enhance healthy living among participants.
