History was made recently at the 16th Convocation at the Redeemer’s University, Ede, Osun State, when two graduands, Miss Anjolaoluwa Grace Kehinde and Miss Favour Chinonso Felix-Ibe, both from the Department of Psychology, Faculty of Social Sciences tie with the same Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 4.96 to emerged the 2024 overall best students among ‘More Than Conqueror’ set, of the University.
Earlier during the Press Conference heralding the convocation ceremony, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Shadrach Akindele, had announced that out of 1,055 graduating undergraduate students, 83 bagged first-class Bachelor degrees, while 435 and 319 others received second-class (upper division) and second-class (lower division) respectively. 86 in the third-class category and 13 with a pass. He noted that for the first time, Redeemer’s University graduates students in Architecture, Electrical/Electronic Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering. This has broadened the academic offerings of the University. At the postgraduate level, 387 students graduated from the University: 33 PhD candidates, three MPhil graduates, and 215 master’s degree recipients.
Similarly, during the event, two distinguished Nigerians, Mrs Grace Olufunmilayo Tamuno, a renounced Librarian who was the Pioneer University Librarian at Redeemer’s University and Mr. Tolulope Adeusi, Chairman, TGM Group, were conferred with honorary degrees for their significant contributions to the institution and society at large.
“Our mission is to produce graduates who are not only skilled in their respective fields but also possess the character and moral fortitude to lead with integrity and humility,” Akindele stated. He further noted that this year’s graduating class, dubbed the “More Than Conqueror set,” embodies resilience and determination, having navigated various academic challenges and personal growth to reach this important milestone.
In a related event at the convocation ceremony, Prof. Akindele highlighted the achievements of the University’s African Centre of Excellence in Genomics of Infectious Diseases (ACEGID), led by Prof. Christian Happi, which has secured additional funding for research into human and zoonotic genomics. The Vice-Chancellor also applauded staff members who have won research grants and fellowships that promotes the University’s global reach. For instance, Professor Adewale Adewuyi of the Department of Chemical Sciences had the following to his name: Joint special ASRT-BA research grant, Cambridge-Africa Alborada Research Grant, Alexander Von Humboldt Fellowship, Fulbright Visiting Scholarship, and Africa-Uninet Research Cooperation Grant.
Similarly, Dr. Basiru Adetomiwa, a Principal Librarian at the University Library, was awarded a full grant scholarship as the only African representative to attend the 2024 FSCI / FORCE11 Conference in Los Angeles, California, USA, and the Deputy Director in the Directorate of Corporate Affairs, Mr. Adetunji Adeleye was conferred the prestigious Fellowships of both the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations and National Institute of Marketing of Nigeria. These fellowships are a testament to his contributions to the development and practices of public relations and marketing professions in Nigeria, he said.
