BRIEF HISTORY
The Directorate of Academic Planning and Quality Assurance (DAPQA) started as Directorate of Academic Planning (DAP)on 1st August, 2006 with two pioneer Academic Planning Officers (APOs) and was headed by Mr. Bernard Ejugu Njor, (APO I reporting directly to the Registrar) and supported by Mrs. Adenike Esther Soyinka (APO II then). Â On 2nd June, 2008, Mr. Olatunji Olugbemi Popoola was appointed as the Chief Academic Planning Officer (CAPO) and took over the leadership of the Directorate (reporting directly to the Registrar). In January 2013, the Directorate was renamed the Directorate of Academic Planning and Quality Assurance (DAPQA) and Professor Kayode Samuel Adekeye was appointed as the Director and served until January 2019. In February 2019, Professor Emmanual Iyayi Unuabonah (Late) was appointed as Director and served until March 2025. Currently (May 2025), the Directorate has four staff: two Deputy Directors, one Academic Planning Officer II and a Clerical Officer.
Functions of the Directorate of Academic Planning and Quality Assurance
The Directorate is responsible to the Vice-Chancellor for the planning of academic programmes of the University and ensuring the quality of service delivery.
The functions of the Directorate include to:
- annually update, analyze and project population data for planning
- liaise with the Bursar in the preparation of the annual recurrent budget estimates
- monitor resource allocation and utilization of same in the University based on the approved budget
- assist in the development of new guidelines and criteria and the review of the existing ones
- collect data on trends in university activities such as enrolments, staffing, staff training, graduate output, etc. and make such data available for research
- collect, analyze and interpret relevant data from all university units
- document and store information on all academic programmes
- ensure that the university complies to and maintains minimum academic standards
- make projections and advise the Vice-Chancellor on areas of major concern and vigilance
- organize the drafting and review of university academic brief
- participate in curricula review activities and to ensure compliance with guidelines and procedures for establishment of new programs
- provide data backed information on academic operations of the university
- publish university records, statistics, research reports, etc
- liaise with the National Universities Commission for delivery and implementation of appropriate policies in the management of the University
- coordinate activities involved in the accreditation of academic and professional programmes in the University; and
- regularly update and evaluate data from relevant university units to analyze the performance of the university.
Achievements (Giant Strides) of the Directorate
Over the years, the Directorate has achieved the following:
- Coordinated the resource verification visits by the National Universities Commission and professional bodies and got approval for the establishment of new academic and professional (both undergraduate and postgraduate) programmes in the University since 2007.
- Coordinated the visits by the National Universities Commission and professional bodies for the accreditation of academic and professional (both undergraduate and some postgraduate) programmes in the University since 2007 and got Interim and Full status.
- Submitted statistical data to the National Universities Commission and other stakeholder annually and on specific issues for effective monitoring of the progress of the University since inception.
- Submitted statistical data to the National Universities Commission and actively participated in the 2021 ranking of universities in Nigeria, which led to Redeemer’s University being ranked the Best Private University in Nigeria and Overall Second Best University in Nigeria.
- Coordinated the submission statistical and other data to the Times Higher Education (THE), Clarivate Global Analytics and other international ranking agencies for ranking of University in Sub-Saharan Africa, Impact Ranking, World University Ranking-Interdisciplinary Science Ranking, etc categories.
- Coordinated the Association of African Universities (AAU)- African Quality Rating Mechanism (AQRM) institutional evaluation exercise for self-assessment.
- Coordinated the National Quality Assurance (NQA) assessment exercise in 2017 and 2018.
- Revised the Academic Brief in 2008 and 2018.
- Produced instrument for the standardization of examination questions in the University.
- Produced instrument and mechanism for monitoring of lectures and examinations in the University.
- Produced questionnaire for the course evaluation and assessment of lecturer by students and vice versa.
- Coordinated training workshops for teaching and non-teaching staff.
- Coordinated the production of the University\s Strategic Plan for 2021-2026.
