BRIEF HISTORY OF CENTRE FOR GENDER, HUMANITARIAN AND DEVELOPMENT STUDIES (CGHDS)
The Centre for Gender, Humanitarian and Development Studies (CGHDS) was established in October 2020 as a centre of excellence for research, consultancies and the interdisciplinary study of Gender, Humanitarian and Development Studies. This is in line with the University’s philosophy, mission and vision of projecting itself as a 21st Century World-class institution and a centre of excellence.
Philosophy
CGHDS is committed to research, training, advocacies and production of knowledge that bring about: reduction in social inequalities; acceleration of inclusive, resilient, sustainable and secure societies; governments and social institutions accountability and gender-responsiveness to the utilization of resources while ensuring that ‘no one is left behind’ in the process of development; and the promotion of standards of good practices in humanitarian responses for sustainable development.
Vision
Promoting gender-equality, humanitarianism, and development through teaching, research, policy analysis, advocacy, training, educational outreach, and partnership with the governments, the private sector, civil society organizations, and development partners as strategies for the attainment of equity, inclusion and sustainable development.
Mission Statement
To promote gender, humanitarian, and development studies, which have been globally accepted as strategies for the attainment of development through teaching, research, policy advocacy, training, educational outreach, and partnership with the governments, the private sector, civil society organizations, and development partners.
Mandate of CGHDS
The Centre has the following mandates:
- Research Mandate: Forging alliance and collaborating with fellow researchers in local and international sister institutions to facilitate multi-sectoral, policy-related and transdisciplinary development-oriented research
- Academic Mandate: Production of knowledge in Gender, Humanitarian, and Development Studies through teaching (predominantly virtual class), research, seminars, workshops and conference via degree and non-degree programmes
- Social Policy and Development-Oriented Mandate: Enhancing the institutionalization of a gender/humanitarian-responsive and development-oriented learning environment; Engagement in consultancies for governments, local CSOs, and international agencies; and Facilitation of town-gown community-development services through transformative interventions targeting women, children, aged persons, persons with disabilities; and other vulnerable groups in the society.
Objectives of CGHDS
As a Centre of Excellence for the interdisciplinary study of gender, humanitarian, and development studies at RUN, CGHDS has the following objectives:
- Design and develop academic programmes and courses at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in Gender, Humanitarian and Development Studies;
- Work with other Departments and Colleges in the University to engender their academic courses where applicable;
- Equip staff/students, policymakers and professionals with analytical and conceptual skills needed to understand gender, humanitarian and development issues in both the public and the private sectors;
- Mainstream gender analytical frameworks into both academic curricula and the administrative system in tertiary institutions;
- Initiate training programmes on institutionalization on gender mainstreaming in higher institutions and other sectors across the nation;
- Build national capacity on gender mainstreaming, humanitarian response, social development planning, and policy analysis, through teaching, training, consultancy, documentation, and networking;
- Promote an inter/transdisciplinary research and policy analysis for sustainable development in all sectors;
- Promote research on contemporary issues of equity and equality associated with gender, social class, ethnicity, political differentiation, health, education, agriculture, science, humanitarianism, policies, human rights, etc;
- Maintain a database on gender, humanitarian and development issues in Osun State and Nigeria at large;
- Establish professional courses to build technical capacity of policymakers, NGOs, Private sector operators, and other professionals in the area of gender, humanitarian and development practice;
- Build partnerships and networks with government institutions, the private sector and the coalition of civil society organizations on issues relating to gender, humanitarian and development practice;
- Initiate research fellowships and forge linkages with international institutions on staff and students exchange programs in gender, humanitarian, policy and development studies; and
- Organize national and international conferences, seminars, workshops, symposia, and other relevant activities that will enhance research and scholarship on gender, women and girls, humanitarian, policy and sustainable development nexus.
CGHDS International Consortium & Development Initiatives
Beyond academics, CGHDS has further broadened its mandate through the execution of the following International consortium events:
- Gender Methodology Workshop Series, which aimed at raising institutional awareness and engendering behavioural change on gender concerns within the University community in 2021.
- Commemoration of the 2021 16 days of activism against Gender-Based Violence on the 8th of December, 2021 with the theme “Together We Can: Ending Gender-based Violence in Nigeria”.
- Commemoration of the 2023 International Women’s Day on March 8, 2023 with the theme “DigitALL: Innovation and Technology.”
- Launch of the CGHDS International Consortium (CGHDS-IC) on the 13th of April, 2023 to raise awareness about pressing global challenges on gender, humanitarian and development concerns in Nigeria.
- Resuscitation of RUN Sickle Cell+ Club in 2023, which was established in April 2009 under the name Redeemer’s University Sickle Cell Area Club at the Redeemer’s University, RCCG Camp Ground, Mowe, Ogun State
- Commemoration of World Sickle Cell Day, 2023 on Monday 19th June 2023 in collaboration with the Nigerian Red Cross, Osun State Chapter and the Redeemer’s University Health Centre with the theme: “Building and Strengthening the Global Sickle Cell Society”.
- Conduct of a 4-day Institutional Advocacy and Community Focused Training Workshop on Migration tagged “Promoting Effective Labour Migration, Decent Work and Standardised Recruitment Process – A Certificated Training Programme” on the 16th of August, 2023 to the 18th of August, 2023 for RUN’s staff, students and community-based relevant key stakeholders in collaboration with Migrant Resource Centre (MRC), a unit of the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, Lagos.
- Commemoration of 2023 16-Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence under the auspices of the Osun State Ministry of Women and Children Affairs with the theme – Invest to Prevent
- Conduct of a 1-day Institutional Advocacy and Community Focused Training Workshop on Migration tagged “Promoting Effective Labour Migration, Decent Work and Standardised Recruitment Process across 4 higher institution of learning” in February, 2024 for students and community-based relevant key stakeholders in collaboration with Migrant Resource Centre (MRC), a unit of the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, Lagos.
- Commemoration of the 2024 International Women’s Day on the 13th March, 2024 with the theme – Inspire Inclusion, Count Her In and Accelerate Progress.
- Commemoration of World Sickle Cell Day, 2024 on 19th June 2024 in collaboration with the Nigerian Red Cross, Osun State Chapter, the Obafemi Awolowo University Hematology Department and the Redeemer’s University Health Centre with the theme: “Hope Through Progress: Advancing Sickle Cell Care Globally”
- Commemoration of 2024 16 Days of Activism in collaboration with the Community Advancement Initiative for Self-Reliance (CAI4SR) on the 6th of December, 2024 with the theme: “UNiTE to End GBV: VAPP Law Implementation,”
