Welcome to the Department of English and Professional Communication. The Bachelors degree programmes in the Department consist of the following options:

(a)    B.A. (Hons) in English Language
(b)    B.A. (Hons) in English and Professional Communication
(c)    B.A. (Hons) in Literature in English

Phylosophy of the Programmes

The philosophy of the programmes is predicated on the fact that Nigeria being a country where English is an added language, a major official language, a lingua franca, and the language of instruction in the educational system, a high level of proficiency in the language is usually expected from the graduates of its Universities. Graduates of English are expected to possess adequate proficiency in the oral and written skills and improved competence in professional communication in the language. They must also acquire adequate knowledge in literary appreciation and skills in creative writing.


Objectives of the Programmes

To train students to acquire adequate communicative in both the spoken and written varieties of the English language, thereby giving them a good grounding and effective mastery of the Language in its various applications to achieve adequate self-expression and self –actualization.

To equip the students with the knowledge of the forms and features of the varieties of English used in different professional communication in domains such as business communication, legal communication, medical communication, electronic broadcast media, print journalism, advertising, sports commentaries, book publishing, editing and biography writing.

To equip the students with adequate linguistic knowledge of the English Language through a detailed study of its sound system, its lexicon, its syntax, semantics and usage.

To adequately prepare the students to pursue postgraduate studies in English Linguistics, English and Professional communication, and to take up teaching and research at the appropriate level of education.

To orient students towards self-employment by focusing on skills such as writing (e.g. of articles in magazines, of speeches, designing and presenting special programmes on radio or TV, designing and publishing magazines, e.t.c.), creative writing and other kinds of original output through independent thought, inventiveness and creativity.

Career Prospects

Graduates of English Language, English andProfessional Communication, and Literature-in-English would be useful in Public Relations and Advertising, Publishing, Journalism, Teaching, Creative Writing, Administration, and Broadcasting as well as in Business and Diplomatic Affairs.
