Welcome message from Head of Department

On behalf of the staff and students, I sincerely welcome you to the Department of Chemical Sciences, Redeemer’s University. The department was established in 2005 as one of the foundation Departments of the College of Natural Sciences.

We offer programmes leading to a BSc (Hons) in Biochemistry, Pure Chemistry or Industrial Chemistry. The philosophy of the department is to raise capable, skilled and God fearing Biochemists and Chemists who will influence every area of life as leading internationally reputable scientists.

The department has a reputation built on research and academic excellence. Pursuance of this, the department has acquired some state of the art equipment located in two modern laboratories namely: Schimadzu UV-VIS Spectrophotometer Model UV-1650 PC; Schimadzu FTIR model IR 8400S; Schimadzu GC – 2014AF; Schimadzu Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer AA-7000F and a Thermal Cycler equipment with the accompanying electrophoretic units and gel documentation system (Alpha Imager, USA). All these instruments are functional and in use. Our equipment are accessible by our students and service other sister universities owing to a stable power supply and conducive environment.

To this extent the students are exposed to modern principles of science and technology with emphasis on the practical aspects of the programmes. The students are blessed and guided by a group of young staff who are enthusiastic and committed to teaching, research and community service. Our members of staff are ranked among the best in the subject and they are current in their chosen field through substantial international exposure to modern laboratories.

Our research endeavours for now have been in the areas of Material/Polymer Chemistry, Environmental and Analytical Chemistry, Environmental Biochemistry/Biotechnology, Biochemical/Molecular Toxicology and Chemoprevention, neurochemistry and Nutritional Biochemistry with special interest in male reproductive health, cardiovascular health, protein energy malnutrition, bioactive compounds in plants, oils from under-utilized seeds, materials engineering for water purification and catalysis and bioremediation as well as organometallic and coordination chemistry.

You are welcome to interact with us or any member of staff in the department.

Professor. G. O Adeyemi
