Final year students and alumni of the Redeemer's University recently wrote an aptitude test for employment by the PZ Cussons, a multinational conglomerate, on the request of the management of the institution.
The programme presented unique networking opportunity for all students, most especially graduating students and the alumni to interface with PZ Cussons Human Resources Team.
While some graduating students used the opportunity to try their state of preparedness towards the competitive labour market, others sought a platform which would enable them to serve with the company in order to gain requisite experience for the future.
The day started with the Managing Director of PZ Cussons, Mr. Alex Goma and his team paying a courtesy visit to the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Debo Adeyewa in his office.
Mr. Goma appreciated the opportunity given to his organisation to partner with the university. He noted that the career fair would provide opportunity for successful candidates among the final year students and alumni of the institution to be recruited into the company's management trainee programme.
He said that there were positions that have been declared vacant for the past three years but had not been filled because his company had been unable to find the suitable candidates for such positions.
He stated that the choice of Redeemer's University was based on the successess of two of its graduates recruited by the company who have continued to perform excellently on the job, most especially Mr. Kayode Adedigba who within two years of joining the company had become a demand planning manager at its corporate head office in Lagos.
While explaining the recipe for career success, he said that attitude is very important. He stressed that education is acquired in school while organisations provide training for competence development, but positive attitude is what nobody can give except one chooses to develop it.
Later in his presentation to students and the alumni of the university, he highlighted various qualities that companies look for in every candidate they want to employ. He note that such qualities like: communication skill, team- building, analytical and numeric skill, customer orientation skill, accountability, transparency and many more are needed to be successful in any workplace.
Mr. Olugbenga Olufeyisan, Head of Recruitment, PZ Cussons took time to make presentation on the company's business portfolio and shed light on the various strategic business units that made up the conglomerate.
He explained various options that were available for the prospective candidates to work.
The distinguishing feature of this career fair was that both students and alumni were brought together to write the recruitment test.
Some of the students who participated in the programme commended the Management for bringing the company to conduct the aptitude test. They noted that the recruitment test had become a learning curve."We now know that writing aptitude test is not a joke, the experience we have gotten would help us get relevant materials in preparation for successful future aptitude tests”, they said.
It will be recalled that the Management of the institution decided few months ago to reach out to companies in Nigeria to recruit its graduates through industry-wide employability initiative. This, expectedly, would position the graduates of the university for employment opportunities.
Meanwhile, other companies have shown interests in recruiting the graduates of this institution. Bollore Africa Logistics, DHL, Investment-One, Mouka Foam, Globacom, Sabmiller and KPMG have approached the university to give them a date for a recruitment fair which shall be communicated to the stakeholders.
